A: As one of the "incoming" (albeit from Canada and not some other 3rd world
nation) I have been stuck in the low paying, poor condition jobs that I have
had to supplement with sales of parts from my project's spare stuff. You'd
think with 30 years experience behind the wrench I'd be a little further
ahead of the curve. My new "manager" bitches me out because of the time I
spend with a customer, yet I post generally higher sales figures than most
and the fewest number of parts I sell come back because I like to make sure
they are right the first time. (correct information results in correct
diagnosis and parts)
I move too slow to ever work in a shop again as a mechanic, but I am
constantly frustrated with the seemingly knowledgeless people in the
business making money hand over fist. (same goes for the customers that come
in. I often have them get a diagnosis from a shop and pop by to have me
confirm or deny the possibility. One yesterday had a bad battery, yet the
shop insisted they needed a new starter and alternator to the tune of $1200.
She made me a VERY nice dinner last night! <G>)

THAT'S why they get jobs -- they WANT TO WORK! I don't mean sit and get
paid, I mean actually WORK, even under poor conditions and with poor pay.
Americans used to want to work...
