Yes they were, but you have to remember also what auto writers and others
said about Hornet, gremlin and other disposable cars from aMC. I have lots of
drive reports, tests and so forth from original magazines not too fond of AMX,
Javelin, Rebel Machine and SC/Ramblers either! One comment has stuck in my mind
for decades "flying brick" yow! But again, AMC/Mopar/Renault/whoever had some
quality control problems with the remier and Medallion, and I don't think either
were really marketed right, if much at all. Mopar had no interest in continuing
them.
You know, the salvage yards here were chock full of them in the 90s. Kind
of a testimonial on how well they were built, lots of Premiers, but rarely saw a
Medallion, not sure how few were actually made. These cars had great interiors,
nice appointed and luxurious, however, luxury ain't getting you no where if car
in shop all the time. Jaguar comes to mind here. Hopefully one day someone will
bring a Medallion to a AMC meet, neat little bit of history lesson, kind of a
car caught in crossfire due to circumstance beyond conrtol with merger. LeCar
was LePeiceOfLeShit, and the 'Appliance' also had troubles but was a 'Car Of The
Year' also. One thing AMC underestimated was people wanted automatics on them.
Automatics that don't crater while still under warranty however! Too bad AMC
never brought in the Alpine and called it AMX5 or AMX6, would have been a image
booster, but the writing already on the wall in late 70s anyhows...
