What happens is they sour people in case they ever have
another car show. This happened to me in 1980s, as Foley's was introducing a new
perfum called 'RED' and asked if I could bring out The Red Death 68 AMX. There
was about 40 cars there....all of them red of course, and only 2 that were new
red cars, one of them being a Mitsubuhi 3000(?) I think that is what they were
called, same shit as a Stealth Dodge. The goofy judges, whihc were not judges at
all, just a few models and a manager, 'picked' that car and needless to say,
most everyone was miffed at being led to believe this was a honest to god 'old'
car show, which it was represented as. Not something drive off showroom and come
win new tv.
I, along with about everyone else, got a bottle of perfume. I
poured mine out on parking space on top of my assigned number before leaving, of
course the bottle was there. Hell, I can't stand Rosie O'Donnell and would like
to take a bat to her; I don't watch Bravo, and sure as hell would not have worn
that perfume anyhows, especially at a disco having Rupaul and buds
hit on me. I do remember going home and telling my wife I just
waseted a whole day for nothing. And it was wasted.
Foleys, now out of business, never had another 'old' car show
and they lost a longtime customer that day. No big deal, and while I
personally think trophies are trouble, everyone wants to be recognized for their
hard work and effort! So if it is a old car show, have some cut off day, as
ain't nothing vintage about 1990!
I think what happened to you is when they put you in
72-current class, they might not have had enough cars to fill up a class. For
instance some national clubs, even ISCA, will bust up a class if too many in one
class. Granted it is impossible to try to put a 40 year old car from
obsolete automaker up against something just driven off showroom with 32 miles.
But what I would have done is protest 'before' the meet; you can do that with
ISCA the day of entry and before judging Thurs. And many times they will assign
you another class, most times with similiar cars like 'non stock 1972-75' for
instance.
This is why when I show in Astrodome (eh, ok, Reliant now) I
watch what class they put me in, and go detail my car more, then walk around to
see what other vehicles are in same class and what are my odds + or -. A few
times I simply told them they had me in wrong class, and they politely changed
it for better or worse.
Good luck at your next show, not all of them like that, and
maybe next time you tell us how you smoked a Saleen at a show or new Crossfire
someone drove there!
