Dan, thanks for the input. Like I said, I found an AMC radio at the junk
yard that is functional, and I'm trying to find a plastic case/box like the
project boxes they sell at Radio Shack to mount it in, then bolt to floor or
dash tray. Hopefully this won't look too tacky. When I owned my 74 Gremlin
(25+ years ago) I cut out the lighter/ash try and mounted an underdash
FM/cassette unit, with a power amp and put speakers in the door. I had to
mount the speaker grills upside down because the window crank wouldn't clear
the top of them. What size speakers fit in the doors?

There was a discussion about the radios not too long ago, and the bottom
line was
that if you ahve a/c, it is impossible to put any known modern unit in the
space. If you don't have a/c, various shallow units will work. I have a/c,
I
got a repalcement center dash piece to hack up and my modern Blaupunky
reciever
sticks out about 2" and looks strange, but there's no other alternative
that's
ergonomically workable, except maybe a center console.
