I would be very concerned with comprising the strength of the webbing. I
don`t know about anyone else but restoration is one thing but the safety
of my passengers is first in my mind. Also i`m sure someone has a black
belt that you could get for free or at least a good price. Just my 2c

i can answer some questions

" What does it fit? What will it fit? (my applications are early six, and
" later V8)

it was original with 327s. iirc it also fits the later v8 t10/t15
bellhousing; may have been used in '67 with 343s.

iirc frank swygert was looking for a setup like this to go with the
4.0 early on in his '63 classic project.

" What is this transmission like - strength, fully synchronised, etc...

very strong - used behind ford 390s and olds 394s, full synchro. btw
the design that the t10 was based on. also btw the last r10 o/d i
could find was on '71 ford pickups with 390 and t89.

One of my buddies has been looking for a 1970 Rebel, he doesn't care
what engine is in the car (6 or 8) in fact I don't know if 6's were even
offered.. No preference for transmission, just looking for a clean (very
little rust) 1970 AMC Rebel. Anyone have an leads or know of any cars
for sale? He does NOT have rebelmachine level funds.

Anyone have any links with Rebel/RebelMachine info?

I just wanted to thank everyone for their suggestions on this. I found a
cover from a Dana 35 on a Cherokee at the local Pick-N-Pull. Perfect fit on
my AMC-15. No leaks.

The one from the Dana 35 is about twice as heavy as my original. It looks
like they completely redesigned it. The fill plug is not threaded either.
It has a rubber stopper type plug that just pushes in.

Iam putting a 72 232 in my 64 american and have decided to use transmission from 72 or later. My repair manual says that the 727, 904 & 998 were Automatics that will work with the 232 six. Which would be the best for my 64. I realize that I will need to change the yoke on the drive shaft and other stuff. Are these trans fluid or air cooled

If I don't change mine out this winter, I'll have to investigate getting one for my 69.
I cleaned and painted mine but it is all dinged on the bottom edge from floor jacks. I can't get the stupid thing to stop seeping fluid! I went so far as to not use a gasket, jacked the rear up as far as it would go RTV'd the cover and left it sit for two days before filling it and it still seeps!

Not having any clue what the term "not the same" actually means---------

I do not purchase anything from J.C. Whitney so can not compare their
cheap junk to anything that is worth buying but---

--
Snip
I have installed 5 Chrome valve covers purchased from Kennedy American
(an AMC vendor) on various
I6 engines including Pacers with no problems at all with fit. The
Chrome has held up o.k. and the fit has
been o.k.,

These valve covers fit all of the 232 and 258 I-6 engines (heads) from
1970 to 1980 also probably the 199
which is related to the 232. In 1981 the head mounting for the valve
cover was changed to be compatible
with the infamous plastic valve cover so the chrome ones for those years
will not fit on 1981 and newer
AMC I-6 engines.
Other variables have to do with the "gulp" valve and the valve used for
catalytic converters when applicable
as there is no mounting location for them on the Chrome Valve Cover, so
they just sit there on top in
my cars.
Also the holes used for Oil Fill, and PCV hose mounting hardware are not
a standard AMC size. I use
oil fill rubber plugs used on the Buick V6 as used in the Jeep. These
rubber plugs were commonly used
on other GM applications too. I core a hole in the rubber as needed to
fit the PCV mounting hardware.
They are also available from Jeff Kennedy as an installation package.
As far as the Pacer goes, there is no difference in valve covers that I
have seen for what that is worth
so I would not worry about them. There are also a number of
manufacturers for Chrome Valve covers
too so there may be different procedures used for other types. But for
what I use, they bolt on with
no more than normal installation quirks.
John.

the 904 is the lightest duty and ordinarily used with sixes, and would

727 too heavy, too much power loss rotating it. Everyone will
say 998 is better, but for a stock 232? No advantage, harder
to find (slightly). 904's are cheap and common and very good!

If you get to pick, choose a later lockup converter model (78
up?) Drop-in identical to earlier models, no external changes,
but you'll get slightly better highway mileage.

Put an aftermarket cooler on it and it'll last a loooong time,
and it's repairable anywhere in the US. Popular transmission.

I don't know where he is located but if anyone is in the area and wants it I have a 73 904 the is free to good home! I can even throw in some possible useable late 80's Wrangler innards. I have the gear set and a good case from the Wrangler, it would take a trasn guy to go over what is there and what is good. The Wrangler trans was toasted and I was told it only needed a kit. I hauled it home and threw the box of stuff and the case in the shed. I pulled it out to sent to Keliegh and found some of the stuff rusty and other parts burnt black.
The 904 is from a 60K miles 73 Hornet and had a delayed engagement, but I never checked the fluid level as it was on a hill. Engine ran perfect, 258, I pulled it down for the crank and rods as I couldn't sell it. Owner passed away and his wife didin't drive.
The whole mess gets trashed in the spring!
