Re: [Amc-list] IH auto question

May use the BW auto to bolt the 327 to the '68 Travelall. More era authentic!

Just a small nit to pick! AMC only used the iron case BW (M-11/12 in 67-69, 66 would still be an M-8) behind 360 and larger engines. The M-4x medium duty aluminum case was used behind 290/304, except 290 w/4V (that used the M-11). IH most likely wanted a heavier trans for the trucks though, and went with the iron case.

Easy way to see if it's an M-8 or 11/12 -- the M-8 in 65-66 had both a TV cable and a vacuum line to the rear of the trans. The vac line was some kind of reference signal, not a modulator. Both are needed for the trans to work right. The M-11/12 only has a vac modulator and an electric kick-down switch. Only way to tell 11 from 12 is to look at the tag or drop the pan. The front servo on the 12 has two bolts holding it down, the 11 only has one. The "extra" bolt is on an ear on the side of the servo. Otherwise they look identical, of course there are a couple other internal changes, but I don't know them right off.

The trans should bolt up to an AMC bell, and the input shaft should be the same, meaning an AMC torque converter should work. BW made a "universal" trans, then supplied a different bell for each make (or the buyer sourced their own bell). That's if you were thinking about keeping it for an AMC.

" '66 to '69 Travelall with IH 304 auto (2wd) is supposed to have a BW auto? If so, any relation to anything AMC?
