AW4 has stood up to my driving (my record for auto trans is somewhat dismal. I killed every 727 and 999 that I didn't build myself and even killed one of the 727s I did build. I have blown TH400s, 700R4s, C4s, C6s, BW, FMX, Jatcos, and a couple Powerglides) and I have a number of std trans I have turfed over the years (that list is pretty long too) 
   The AW4 are dirt cheap to find around here too. (junkyards flog off the 2wd version for under $250. Got mine for $100 with the computer and harness!) If I needed one built, I have Seatac trans here to do it (@$500 on the bench I was told) Usually only a solenoid goes bad and might take clutches with it if not fixed soon enough.

I found some more info on doing the A340 transplant.
Very interesting stuff...
seems if you install one behind the AMC 4cyl it will make the car twice as fast as the 700.
 
Well, I'm convinced.
 
So, near as I can tell the guy I found with the best price is near to Ol Brien.
 
If you run a search for A340 trans specials it comes up under dogpile.
 
Brien can you pick one up and ship it for me if I send you the money???
