In my experience oversize pistons are marked on the piston top with the oversize dimension.  Clean the tops of the pistons well and look for 030.

Also, as you know a "gash" can become a stress riser and can lead to a break.  So I would be very cautions about using a damaged piston.  You might be able to polish or gently grind that area of the piston to reduce or eliminate the hazard, but I think I'd be looking for a new piston.
