Will 1965 AMC Marlin front disc brakes fit a 1969 AMX?

====================

All makes of 65-70 cars used the Bendix four piston calipers -- they were the only ones readily available at the time. The problem is the calipers wear and leak. The only fix is an expensive stainless steel insert -- IF they aren't pitted so bad they can't be bored and sleeved.

The problem is in the design. They look just like modern four piston calipers (Brembo, Wilwood, etc.), but there is one seemingly minor design change -- the Bendix brakes have the seal on the piston, the modern versions have the seal in the bore. On the old ones the bore wears and the caliper bodies have to be sleeved or replaced, on the new ones the easy and cheap to replace piston wears. Actually, the pistons are made of a harder steel since they only ride on the rubber seal and hardly ever wear at all, just the seal wears. Seemingly minor change, HUGE difference!

If you're doing a concours (100%) restoration the 65 Marlin brakes will work. The only difference in the 65-67 disc setup and the 68-70 is that the 65-67 cars used non-servo rear brakes to reduce rear brake capacity whereas the 68-70 used a factory set proportioning valve. You can get the valve for a 68-70 Mustang or Camaro -- they used the same brakes and are about the same weight bias as a Javelin. The Javelin and AMX used the exact same valve, no difference. You can get one that looks the same, but looks won't really matter. Alternately you can use an adjustable valve and adjust to your car.
