Re: [BaadAssGremlins] Re: 360 Engine for the Gremlin

Charlie we run a 360 in our Gremlin for several years and had good luck with a 360 block just like yours. Dished pistons and a 292 comp magnum cam with ported and polished 72 401 heads.Shifted at 6500 rpm.Soon our 401 will be ready and hope to go faster. We run a 9 inch ford rear with a spool and 5.87 gears.31x13" tires and a 4500 stall converter. The Gremlin body is a lot stronger than the 360 engine will be.You wont hurt it. I would go with a 280 magnum comp cam and your intake and carb for a stout little street ride.We had Herman Lewis build us a 370 a couple of years ago and I could not see much difference between it and the 80 model jeep motor with the good heads even with the dished pistons.E . T. barely changed. I run a 280 in my street Javelin and it is STRONG from 40-45 mph to 110+ with 10 to 1 pistons in a 401 and 4.11 gears.Good Luck

Thanks Ed, Dave, Rick & Davis for responding to my question!

My 75 Gremlin has a factory 304. I am the original owner and it has 44k miles on it. All engine mods are "external" and include Hedman Headers, dual Flowmaster mufflers, an Edelbrock Performer Manifold, Edelbrock Performer 4 bbl carb. The gears were changed to 3.54. The transmission is original 904.
The 304 is too sluggish to suit me despite the aforementioned alterations. I want more oomph without going overboard. This is a street car I drive 200 miles a year at best, always to a show. I figured if I put the bored .40 over 360 in it with a good cam it and used my existing headers, manifold, carb, etc., I'd be ahead of the game. Inexperienced with such things, I wonder what internal engine modifications will give me the most bang for the buck. I realize that AMC Gremlins are not the sturdiest and I sure don't want to create so much horsepower that I must change the transmission, drive shaft, etc., etc, etc.
I'm more of the quarter mile kind of guy but would like an engine that performs well at the lower mid range – If I'm doing 40 – 50 MPH and I give it the gas, I'd like it to "go", if you follow me. This car will never see the track – that's just not me. What kind of cam should I get? What other type of internal engine mods will give me the most horsepower for the buck? If I change the cam, what other components must be changed as a result? Davis - I have no idea why I would change the pistons other than I thought perhaps better compression meant more horsepower. But, I don't know these things and readily admit it!!
Thanks in advance!
Charlie
