What number champion plug do you use in this motor, the tech manual says
RN12yc-the champion website calls for the RN14yc,

Champion made an error when they re-configured their spark plug stocking
when calling out AMC spark plugs. They have been informed but could
probably stand it again as they have made no effort to change the stock
listing.
RN12YC plugs are the correct plugs for almost all AMC engine
application.
The Champion stock number is 404 RN12YC

I put the 14's in my amx, now its not running as good.

14's are hotter than recommended and can cause problems specifically
detonation, which may explain your lack of success .
For a variety of reasons I run Champion RN9YC plugs (Champion Stock
Number 415) in my AMC cars with excellent success. They are a colder
plug and apparently suit my driving conditions better. A modified engine
driven hard or even a stock engine driven hard can benefit from colder
plugs.
