You're probably aware of this, but air cooled means no lines from trans
to radiator. That would be water cooled. The air cooled trannies have a
large opening on the right (passenger's) side of the bell. It's cooled
simply by air moving over the converter, which has a funny looking
"fan" on it (though you wouldn't know it was a fan by looking at it).
Not trying to make you look stupid, it's just that some people insist
on calling the water cooled trannies "air cooled" since air runs
through the radiator and does the cooling. That's not what I mean.

If it came from an Ambassador, it's probably a model 37, which is a
heavier duty version of the 35. It will work fine in the Typhoon,
actually better than a 35 (which is what I think it came with). I've
never seen an air cooled trans in an Ambo, but I've never dealt with a
six cylinder Ambo either.

Bob, the local parts places should be able to get a fuel pump, though they will probably have to order from the warehouse. Try the local NAPA first. You might have to use a 65 Jeep Wagoneer listing. If they don't have one, go to an AMC vendor such as www.ramblerparts.com or try www.kanter.com. If you're in a hurry bypass the original and use a universal electric pump. Mount it near the tank under the rear of the car, not under the hood. It won't be as detectible sight or noise wise, and they are really designed to push more than pull. Run a wire either from the ignition "run" lead or use a toggle switch. The toggle is a good theft deterent if hidden, but don't forget to cut it off!!

I don't see any risk in publishing a list of names, phone numbers, cities, and states. All that info can be found with just a name on the Internet or by using an old fashioned phone book. Now if social security numbers and/or drivers license numbers were being included, I'd be concerned. The information being asked for is available to anyone easily though. I've had all that info for myself available on my website for years, no one's shown up at the door yet!

Pretty quiet here, Rambler-wise. Prepping the Rambler (63
Classic Wag) for the trip to Black Rock Desert. The Hornet took
all the attention for the last two years.

I'm having a hell of a time getting the M35 trans pan to seal.
I bought a filter/gasket kit (imagine my surprise, NAPA stocked
it, NAPA 1-4730) The pan was bent from overtightening (I may have
added to that, but it was leaking before), straightened that, and
used good non-hardening permatex, glued the thick rubber gasket
(old one was thin crap cork) to the pan, coated all surfaces,
etc. This AM it shows leaks! I under-tightened it this time,
so I snugged it gently with a 1/2" nutdriver. Bummer though that
there's ATF between the permatex and body. In my desparation I
also ran a bead of "Right Stuff" around the pan after degreasing.

Visited my parents last weekend, a very traumatic trip. Let's
just say they are nice people, and terrible parents. My father
has Parkinson's, a bit of dementia, now. He built two hotrods
(Ford stuff), he sold the very nice but cliche 32 coupe,
and kept his "old time" rod -- a T ('glas) on homemade rails,
flathead 8, lincoln trans and rear, 20" skinny wheels, homemade
friction shocks, etc. Totally unique and old-style. Hasn't run
in three/four years; two years ago he took out the starter for
some reason, and in his failing state munged it. I got it all
back together, new wires, battery, etc. and got it running.
Drove that up and down the street.

After Blessing of the Cars two weekends ago, I was actually
impressed with some of the very fun hybrid ratrods -- one in
particular, though it was kind of an abomination (a 56 Hillman
station wagon, roof removed, with hot rod front end and chevy
inline 6!) that I am considering do this with my 73 Hornet
parts car. No one wants the empty chassis, and I was basically
planning on completely stripping it, sawzalling and disposing
of it [if you want it lemme know].

We attended for the 5th year, on 30 July, in the Rambler. Brought
a shade structure and BBQ gear and the dogs and beer, nice
white trash outing. Three Ramblers total: mine, David's
immacualte 65 American convert, and a 59 Rambler [American]
wagon, spotless, nearly original, shiny red, with a chevy v6
driveline. (The owner had a lot of grief with the 196 flathead;
he had it rebuilt but kept running into relaibility issues
(it's a daily driver also in LA freeways) and the v6 fit with
no chassis mods, firewall cutting etc. A nice clean transplant
in that tight engine compartment.

Today I talked to the organizer, and she said that AMCs are
welcome to that event, even though the "official" vehickle
age cutoff year is 1967. She want it to be a fun event, and is
personally partial to AMCs because of their orphan status.

PLAN ON ATTENDING NEXT YEAR!! www.blessingofthecars.com It's a
great Los Angeles area car culture event -- thousands of cars,
and 10,000 people, a huge swath of SoCal car culture.
