Re: [AMC-list] 62 rambler axle power capability

I have 10+ years on the 15 in my American, 3:31 twingrip with 4.0L, T5 and 255/60R15"s. I beat on it a few times, it does not spin much, hooks up pretty good actually, twingrip still twingrips! It does not make any noise and shows no real sign of anything failing. I have not touched the hub nuts either. I did put Mobile One gear lube in it when I put it under the car to replace the 3:08 open axle that was in it. That gear lube is the only mod. I also had to find one of the stupid "step"seals AMC used. I found an NOS one and had to take the spring out of my leaking seal and put it in the nos seal as the NOS seal spring was RUSTED through from shelf life, so beware of that if you buy any NOS seal. An AMC-15 is on par with the small axles Ford behind the early 80's Mustang GT that had a 7.5" ring. As long as you don't beat the living crap out of it you should be OK for at least a few years if not longer, I don't know exactly what you need to do to get a yoke seal setup you will
need when you pull the Torque tube? I do know a guy somewhere I saw has succeeded in adapting a trans to the actual front of the torque tube on a car. I would not go that route personally. No matter how you look at it a torque tubes actually drive shaft is tiny and possibly the weakest link if you leave it in there? I'm sure someone else will chime in shortly and if you need anything from an open driveshaft AMC 15 let me know, I have a couple laying around from 68 Americans. Mark ----- Original Message -----
