John,

I know it's possible. I remember guys doing it back in the late 70's with
straight ethanol. I have heard of issues with fuel line corrosion. I'm not
sure if it's from the alcohol, or the water in the alcohol.

The corrosion is not a result of the ethanol. Rather it is already in existance in the system and the ethanol is an excellent solvent, it cleans away the varnishes and exposes the corrosion, end result is a leak that would have developed at some time, but made it's appearance due to the introduction of ethanol. People then blamed the water in the ethanol. Not true at all, You will need to keep a bunch of fuel filters on hand and should replace all old system gaskets and hoses as the originals aren't the best for ethanol. Anything made since the introduction of 10% blend should be fine. all new gaskets and hoses are designed for the ethanol. Keep some fuel filters on hand and watch for leaks! The ethanol will clean things out and plug filters for a few miles.

You may have to richen up the mixture some with E85 to get an optimum mix, but it should run fine as-is, that's why they left the 15% gasoline in it. E100 requires rejetting carbs and idle mixtures. Lots of info available online, look around. I've done some reading as I plan on using E85 in the Convertible when/if I get to the drivetrain stage.

you'd also have to make sure your entire fuel system was alcohol-safe.
it can attack plastics gasoline doesn't, and can encourage corrosion
in metals that gas doesn't attack.

and iirc you need much more carb heat to properly vaporize alcohol
too.

i don't know if the 15% gasoline in e85 in any way mitigates these
pure-alcohol behaviors.

You should be able to find websites on converting. If you can't, search for ethanol conversions. E85 is 85% ethanol, 15% gasoline. That's just enough to increase volatility for easier cold weather starts/running as I understand it.

Make sure you rebuild the carb and replace all fuel lines if they are original. Any natural rubber and some older synthetics will be erroded by the ethanol. If you have a plastic or foam float I'd replace that too. Any new one should be alcohol resistant, or any made over the last 15-20 years (since "gasohol" -- 10-15% ethanol -- has been out).

If you look on the door tag (with model#, etc.), it should have something about the Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1966, a list of specific regulations, or "meets all federal safety standarda applicable at time of manufacture". The first one is the most common. The law for hazard lights came into effect 01 January 1966 -- the Motor Vehicle Safety Act. 1966 models produced before January did not have to have flashers. AMC had an under dash switch that was factory instaled on late 66 models, and could be dealer (or owner) installed on all prior AMC built cars. I'm not sure how earlier Nash models were wired, but if they used bullet connectors (most likely) the switch would be useful back to 1946. Of course it could be used on other cars with bullet connectors, just match the colors. IIRC the instructions sheet with the switch has the function of each wire, though in an AMC you just matched colors. The 66 TSM shows the switch.

The switch could have been removed at a later date also. Maybe it quit working or the owner didn't like it? I have one, bought it at Kenosha in 98. The back of the switch will break off pretty easy, causing shorts. I ended up taping mine up to prevent this, but removed it once I installed a 1980s GM column.

I've never not been around since I found the list.
Sometimes I'm just plain too busy or depressed to post, but I'm usually around!
I hate this time of year, Time changes and my system goes into convulsions and it is commencement time at work with all the students trying to get things done and people are stressed out. This year I'm fighting back and taking any minute I see available and just leaving work for a while. I made 1/2 my base salary in overtime last year and life sucks when you can't enjoy it! Money or not! Therefore my goal is to work less hours and let the year end gross fall if it needs to!
I haven't done much touching of my cars recently, I hope to soon. I've done some parts gathering, like I need more!
I would really like to clear up some more stuff and if anyone needs any American small parts or Ambassador misc let me know your needs and I'll look to see what is floating around my various pile, just don't be in a big hurry!
I really want to get the trough area and drivers cowl corner rebuilt in the Ambassador. I've got definite plans on how that is going to be done!
I've got the stuff here to put 12" WJ discs on the front of my American with 82-83 Concord calipers. Then I will put the remaining stuff over onto the Ambassador. I thought about putting the 12" discs on the Ambassador, but I don't want to go to a big aftermarket wheel on it. I've heard mixed results on getting the WJ rotor and Concord XJ caliper to clear 15" wheels, so I won't know if it will work till I try it. I need to get the rotors drilled to 4 1/2" pattern yet. I'm thinking of having it done at a shop, but don't have time to get an estimate on this.
Enough for now, maybe next time I can report some actual results on something.
Yes, I'm still willing to sell the Ambassador project!

Are the box and switch both still available new then? :]
I know an American that needs intermittant wipers and I've already converted it to a Hornet switch and XJ wiper motor so The intermittant should be a plug in deal!

Back in the 70's when I lived in California, I installed a FMX tranny in
our "Were Gone" 12-second street-strip 69 SC/Rambler. It has been so many
years since I did it that I have forgotten exactly what we had to do to
install it but the FMX held up to the abuse we gave it!

What number champion plug do you use in this motor, the tech
manual says
rn12yc-the champion website calls for the rn14yc, I put the 14's
in my amx
now its not running as good, I pulled autolites out and didn't
take the
number off them- I think they were 65's, and their website calls
for 66's
wHAT GIVES?

Life seemed so ez

Jeff, The period correct plugs for your AMX are Champion N-12Y, the
C is a for a modern copper core plug. I never got along with the copper
core plugs. I always thought they were a step backwards. Also the factory
plugs are a solid plug without the screw on cap most after market plugs have.
Be sure you have the caps on tight or the engine can miss. I use the Bosch
Platinum plugs in my cars. Platinum has a wider more forgiving heat range
then a standard or copper core plug because it flows electricity and heat
better.
Yes, they are couple bucks more then standard plug but I've always had good
luck with them
in AMC engines. Get the Bosch plug in an N-12 Champion heat range and you
should have no problems.

Actually, the switch assmebly is quite different between delay and
non-delay... first, there's the delay pot reach by turning left from OFF
that's obviously not there on the non-delays, but also, the plug that
mates to the back of the switch is subtly different and won't
interchange -- you need a delay-wiper connector to match the delay-wiper
control. They look almost the same though; just one blocking lug moved.
