Well, after about a year, they are finally done. We
now have forged I-beam rods for the smaller engines
along with new forgings for the 390 and 401. These
are 4340 forging in the 5.875 length. The small end
is bushed for .930 floating pins (I have full floating
Ross pistons to with these) and come with 8740 ARP cap
screw bolts. These are not some other make rods that
are altered to fit an AMC. These were made
specifically for the 290-360 engines.

These are able to handle up to 800hp but more
importantly, they are a great upgrade from our stock
cast rods in the smaller engines.

With all the great parts like these, hopefully we will
have more guys looking to build up the smaller engines
verses tossing them out for a 390 or 401.

Call or e-mail me for more details.

Thanks,

Nick Alfano

Deja Vu?

I found this on the web today:

NEW YORK - Automakers Renault SA and Nissan Motor Co.
are interested in purchasing a significant stake in
General Motors Corp. and including the struggling
Detroit company in their alliance, according to a
letter sent Friday to GM from billionaire investor
Kirk Kerkorian's investment company.

Looks like I'm the high bidder on a Mustang 2.95 geared trans that needs a cluster and an input.
I hope I didn't just by a piece of junk, but I have my fingers crossed it will only need the cluster [$108], input [$60.00]and the tailshaft swapped to the AMC unit from mine.
If all else fails I should end up with a world class core to build from!
Anyone want to point out what an idiot I am? :]

The A/C cold box (1970 and up, or down) is connected
to the dash control by an aluminum tube. This appears
to be non-removable, is it? I'm not talking about the
slider cables.
I have several of these units that I would like to
stash and that tube is damn flimsy. The
Hornets/Gremmies are all this way, and I found my AMX
the same. Does this tube just act as an air chimney
and when did AMC start and stop using it?......Russ

Bob; what I did on my 65, and it works like butter, is
to take off the control from the engine, or firewall
depending on what type you have, and soak it real good
with WD-40. Work the valve back and forth to loosen
everything up. Then lube it with a good Teflon lube. I
bet the PO, or maybe you, lubed it with WD-40 only.
WD-40 will dry it out then rust and scale will set in.
While the control is off and the cable loose hook up a
funnel on the open end of the cable. Pour a graphite
cable lube down the cable and work the cable back and
forth.
Hook everything back up and you should be good to
go.....Russ

If our talking about the small capillary tube, it should pull out of the evaporater. You may have to open the case to get it out. If you kink or smash it the control is done and you will need to replace it. It's basically a thermometer type device that transfers the information of how hot or cool the evap is by the the amount of presure in the tube. Be carefull with it! Switching the old A/C's to "desert" mode simply bypasses this sensor. In humid climates the evap will then freeze up. YOu can adapt parts that are still available to these units if one gets trashed or smashed. They used them clear up thru the 80's on AMC's and some Renaults.
Aftermarket units where almost all knob based, Factory units could be either lever or knob.
Now that I've typed all this, I figure you will be talking about something else.!

I picked up an old Craig 4-track from a swap meet and
am looking for those little skinny triangle speakers.
Remember those tinny sounding speakers that we all
cranked up our 3 Dog Night tapes to. I have about 6
good 4 tracks and am looking for more. Gonna put on
the floor with one of those removable brackets.
I'm putting my 440-H to period correct cruising specs,
so figure out when I used to "Cruise the Gut" (Mayfair
to Bobs, then back. Out to the Sludge about 2AM for
some racing, and crawl back home about 5)......Russ

Switching over from Vac to elect was the first thing I
did to my 65.
You will need the dash control, wires, motor and arms.
Very basic. The wires all connect with designated
connectors, but one switch hooks up to the fuse, the
long blue one I believe. Everything else is just bolt
in. A couple of things to consider.
- the motor assy must be American as it has a special
plate to fit the firewall. Oters can be made to fit
with no special tools. I fit a hornet motor on my Vac
plate and it works fine.
-when you remove your existing arms fix a guide wire
to the old arms to help snake the new armsthrough. I
used twine the first time and they broke, so I had to
use a coat hanger after that.
-Use rain X religiously. You will have less wiper usage.....Russ

Mike; the way I remember it is a NW Rambler dealer
started the Rogue badge in 64 for a special dealer
prepped 440. He did this for 2 years and AMC carried
it on in 66. I don't think the 290 had anything to do
with it being a Rogue. The dealer may have been a
Portland area guy. Any one with a better memory.....Russ

I think you are referring to the capillary tube that runs from
the temperature control knob (on the right of the levers, on the
70 small cars) down to the airbox containing the evap unit. 1/8"
diameter, like a fat wire?

It is removable; there's a single screw and small clamp holdin
the probe end into the airbox. Don't crack that tube! It's
copper, and contains pressurize freon. If it leaks out you have
to buy a new control (about $40 NOS).

Yes, they are very breakage-prone. I suggest VERY LOOSELY
coiling it into a 10" diam. loop -- no kinks! 6" radius! and
put in an oversized box.

Mark; Posi (GMs name) has only 4 key strokes.
Twin-grip(AMCs name) has nine. Since Posi is generally
accepted by most people to describe what they all do,
I use posi. Less wear and tear and I can save wear and tear......Russ

Anyone know what happened to D&D? The trans and input I bid on from eBay is supposed to be one of their builds, so I thought I'd look over their site and it does not seem to be up and running. So, it has me wondering if they moved or closed down. I am just trying to figure out what parts they used, but so far can't seem to find a useable link. Best I can figure right now is once I replace the cluster and any worn parts it should be good for about 305 ft-lbs. It does not have the Cobra pocket bearing input. It is supposed to have had about 2,000 miles on it and been in good shape befor ethe guy managed to wedge a 23T input into it to put it in his 94 and wiped out the cluster.
I'll be useing my AMC throwout collar or a GM steel piece and a new cluster.
I also need to figure out what I can use for a clutch disc. Right now I have a 10.9" Jeep clutch/pressure Plate/Flywheel in place. I also have a 10" 4.0L flywheel I could move to.
Anyone have any thoughts on which way to go?

Frank had to say this in his post about Gen to Gen 2 changeover - "at
least not in 67 (I don't think the Ambo ever got a 290 or 304)." Frank,
the 67up Ambassadors did come with 6-cylinders, the 290 and then in 70,
71 for sure, the 304 was available in Ambassadors.
