Wanted 71-74 Javelin AMX - I would like to find a nice driver or easy 
restore car with little rust and no rot. Ideally I would like to find a car 
that I could drive now, enjoy and restore later. The most important thing 
would be that the car is complete with a good body and not eaten up with 
rust. I prefer an AMX but would also consider a nice Javelin. I am loacated

Hello, I would like to trade my car for a classic AMC! I am looking for an 
AMX (preferably a first gen or '77-78), a hornet hatchback, a Rebel hardtop 
or wagon, or a first gen Javelin (preferably a 1970). I would consider other 
models as well depending on there condition.Let me know what you have.The 
car I might trade is a 1965 Chevelle 2dr hardtop, not running but rust free 
and complete less drivetrain.(some new parts)I am in Northern New Mexico.

I am rebuilding a head for a cast iron 196 OHV engine, and one of the
big AMC
parts vendors recently emailed me that hardened valve seats are no
longer being 
manufactured.  He said: "The last company to make those closed last year
and
with them the stock was disposed of."

It has been my understanding for many years that AMC induction hardened
their heads and for the most part had no need to install hardened valve
seats when rebuilt. This applies to pre-non-leaded gasoline days. I do
not know if this really goes back many years before but on the other
hand I don't really care as I have many happy miles on AMC engine I have
rebuilt with out worrying about it and so do many people that I know. In
fact I have never heard of any one having a problem supposedly related
to problems associated with non-leaded fuel, but I have heard of
installed hardened valve seats dropping out and causing pistons to
shatter thus destroying engines.
 
For what it is worth, I would not worry about it or even give it a
second thought.

i was cruisin around town today in my 62 classic, and
had a guy chase me down to talk to me about ramblers.
said he has a 65 rambler. wanted me to follow him to
his house and take a look at it to see how much it
would take to get it back on the road. inherited it
from his mom when she passed. it is a 65 classic 770 2
door. has 287, auto. surface rust on hood, roof and
trunk. trim is all intact. has one big dent on the
left front fender. nothin sever. overall, nice shape.
i am going to get the engine running for him, and see
what else it will need to be driveable. it will need
both tail light lenses however. one is completely
gone, the other is half gone. anyone have a set they
might part with? interior looks fair as i can see with
all the "junk" he has stored inside of it. engine has
been sittin for a while with no valvecovers. i think i
can get it in good shape for him. dont appear to need
alot of work to get it to driving again. i need to
know what transmission that might be in there, and
also about the tail lights. anyone able to help,
thanks. im kinda excited to hopefully be able to get a
second rambler on the road in town. hope everyone is
havin a great day.

I would look to adding a 'plate' below the floor -
and  a 'plate' above to sandwich the floor itself,
bolting thru all three for added strength.

I've seen bolts that have sheer'd, Uni-Body floor
metal that , weaken'd from time and nature, allowed
the belt sites to tear the metal.

Welding on a plate to old Uni-Body sheet-metal floor
raises questions - I know they weld roll-cages in, but
that is a different set of stress inputs - almost unrelated
to 200lbs. @ 45mph suddenly yanking on a small square
patch weld on old sheet metal..........

If I did weld in the top plate anchor - I would extend the
bolt thru the floor and thru a 'sandwich plate' beneath the
floor > seal it up so it won't catch water / dirt / salt and
call it even. 

Make certain you round the edges of the plates instead
of 'razor edged'........

I'd also take a long look at the hardware / bolts / nuts / flat
washers for the installation as well.


Went over this on the Jeepster site - many wouldn't install
seat belts since they weren't an 'option' in the '48 - '51
open roadster Jeepsters.

My late 'Doc' [father] installed racing lap and shoulder
harnesses in his 1959 Dodge Sierra Station Wagon in
1962!  These were twice the thickness of todays belts,
with heavy polished 'things' you'd pull the belts thru
and cinch up - had 'teeth' that bit the adjusting belts - 
and they worked nicely.

another rant..........

I tapped a car infront of me in my GTO just after a 'misting'
of rain one afternoon, as the person couldn't decide which 
lane they wanted - after I'd let them out of the Bank parking lot.
..... they locked up the brakes to sit and think.......... 
GTO slid @ ........ 5 mpH maybe ?  upon impact -
I came out of the seat - over the steering wheel and smacked
my forehead on the convertibles' steel header.

Yes, I was on my way to the Insurance Agent, to pay the
6mos. policy........ and it was just across the street from
that Bank.

  Speaking of seat belts... Soon my oldest daughter will not be able 
to 
fit in the car seat she uses in the Eagle. I was considering using 
the 
set up from these folks http://www.ezonpro.com/ (or something 
similar) 
in the Eagle for the rear seat. Three setups would allow me to seat 
my 
daughter (with) and niece (without) a booster seat and my youngest in 

her car seat. When they're ready, they'll be able to sit in the back 
with more than just a lap belt. They have a set up that welds to the 
floor and has two shoulder belts that come up and over with loops 
that 
the OE lap belts go through giving a four-point harness.

Has anyone tackled this problem in their old AMC? Thoughts on this?

I posted late last night so some may have missed it, but I just realized I 
MAY
have a ball bearing hub from that Pull-a-part Eagle, that could explain the
difference. I would have probably had to take the seal off to find out.

However, the main questions remain.

1. Anyone tried to match a Jeep hub to an Eagle?

2.Were there any hubs ever offered that were fully sealed, ball bearing OR
tapered roller bearing?

Quoting myself:

"I recently replaced a front hub for the obvious reason. It was a hub from a
Pull-a-part Eagle, so I had no idea it was going to be different than what I
would eventually change out. I had lined up bearings and seals to rebuild
the old ones, and was confused that there was no listing for the INNER seal
on the carrier, NOT the knuckle seal. TSM did not show a seal there, either.
Once removed and side by side, all important dimensions were there, and it
DOES fit and run fine. However, the differences of note are: Original has an
O-ring on the inner side to knuckle, and NO inner carrier seal, and bearing
flush with carrier. Replacement has NO O-ring, and the inner face of the
carrier is deep enough for, and has a seal that sits flush to the carrier.
It even seals properly on the spacer. This renders the knuckle seal kind of
redundant except to act as a dust seal, or extra seal. Seems that seal gets
worn and lets in junk and moisture which probably is what killed my hub.

Question, then is this a Jeep hub, or an aftermarket improvement or even a
factory replacement? On-line catalogues don't cross over, but the inner seal
is a Jeep feature, and the taper inside down to the seal appears identical
to on-line pics. PLUS, the outer seal is the same for Jeep and Eagle.
Otherwise, nobody seems to list a hub assembly for the Eagle."

Just to do a brief update, rather than re-posting what I posted over at 
CJOffroad.com and CJ-8.com... the phrase for this week is, "or it will
die." :D
Got the front end taken down on Monday night, and checked the timing
gears- sure enough, set to the advanced keyway. I set it back to 0*,
and called it a night. Wednesday night I got everything tightened back
up and put back together, and reset the timing and carb- timing is at
12* BTDC, BBD idle mix screws are 2.5 turns out each. Took it for a run 
and there's still a very faint knock at heavy throttle, but for
everyday driving, it's fine.
The NEW problem is that it won't idle when cold. Give it a kick in the
morning and it starts with a healthy roar, idles for a second or two,
then dies as though I've turned the key off. Kick it again, and it
fires up and dies just the same, and it will do that as many times as I 
like. LOL! 
To make it idle, I have to feather the throttle, which causes it to
stumble and cough, but then I have to hold the pedal to keep it going.
Also, if I let the clutch out, it will stall almost straight away
unless I give it a LOT of gas and rev it way up. I can't take my foot
off the gas, or it will die.
The first few stops I make, I have to feather the throttle and clutch
VERY carefully, or it will die. It idles okay once it's warmed up, and
I can modulate the clutch like normal once I'm 5-10 minutes into my
drive, but otherwise it acts like it doesn't have any power behind it.
Accelerates just fine, cruises just fine. 
Just off-idle (around 1-1.5k RPM), there's a flat spot where it want to 
die- it shudders and sighs, and there's the sound of sucking air thru
the intake. I don't know if it's too rich, which means I should back
off the accelerator pump setting, or if it's too lean, and I need to
somehow feed it more gas off-idle.

Anyone have any suggestions?
